Bohemian Rhapsody 2nd Greatest Rock Song Ever in Planet Rock Poll
Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway To Heaven’ has been confirmed as the single Greatest EVER Rock Song according to listeners of Planet Rock. The 1971 epic, which appears on the band’s fourth album, easily topped the month long poll, taking more than 15% of all the votes.
Led Zeppelin are probably the biggest and most important rock band of all time, and Planet Rock’s listener poll would seem to back up that assertion with the band represented THREE times in the Top Ten and a massive TEN TIMES in the top 100.
Queen’s inimitable ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ – a two-time UK number 1 single – was runner up in the poll, with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ten minute masterpiece ‘Free Bird’ landing at number 3.
The top ten voted songs:
1) Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
2) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
3) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
4) Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
5) Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
6) Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
7) Rainbow - Stargazer
8) Free - All Right Now
9) Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
10) Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
The Top 30 countdown will played on Planet Rock from 2-6pm on Bank Holiday Monday (August 27).
Interesting Facts about the Poll
The poll results prove once and for all that size DOES matter, with rock epics dominating the chart. The average track length top ten is an eye-watering 7 minutes 9 seconds.
And rock really was better back in the day, with 55% of the top 100 released in the 1970s and not a single song released after the year 2000 making the list.
Top 100 Greatest Rock songs will be listed online at www.planetrock.com from 6pm Monday 27th August 2012.
