QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS ADD EXTRA UK CONCERT DATE
One of the headliners of this week’s 46664 Concert for Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday, Queen + Paul Rodgers have announced they will play a third London date on their already expanded autumn European tour.
Having already sold out two nights at the capital’s 02 Arena, the band have added another London show, this time at Wembley Arena on Saturday 8th November.
The Wembley Arena date goes on sale 9am this Saturday, 28th June.
Queen + Paul Rodger’s Cosmos Rocks European tour begins mid-September and takes in 11 UK concerts coming to a close with the newly-added Wembley concert.
Wembley played a major part in the history of Queen. The band made their last-ever London concert appearance with Freddie Mercury at Wembley Stadium at the end of the band’s final UK tour – the Magic tour – in 1986. It was also the setting for their most famous concert appearance, the Live Aid show a year earlier.
Brian May recalls: “The Wembley concerts in 1986 were the pinnacle for us, “ say Brian May. “We were at our height band-wise, and Freddie had developed this phenomenal way of dealing with stadium audiences. Being back home in London playing two sell-out nights was such a big, big occasion for us. None us realised that this would be almost the last time we played together…”
Roger Taylor and Brian May returned to play Wembley one further time, as organisers and performers for the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert held at Wembley Stadium in April 1992.
This Friday’s concert marks Queen’s third concert appearance for Nelson Mandela’s 46664. Brian May and Roger Taylor played a key part in the founding of 46664 in October 2003 and appeared at the inaugural concert in Cape Town in November 2003. With Paul Rodgers they appeared at the subsequent 46664 Fancourt concert of March 2005. Brian May in addition appeared at 46664 Tromso held in Norway in June 2005.
Since becoming involved with Mr. Mandela’s 46664 HIV AIDS campaigning body, May and Taylor have gone on to write songs especially for the organisation: 46664 – The Call, Invincible Hope and the track Say It’s Not True from their forthcoming album which the band donated to 46664 for World AIDS Day 2007.
