“They say that I’m dangerous, like everything I touch falls it apart, if five outta 10 would kill me now. Well I’m a cut to the chase, because I’m living like a rockstar, I aint afraid, the good die young."
Fresh from the massive success of his No.1 debut solo single ‘No Regrets’, UK superstar Dappy returns with a second surefire smash hit ‘Rockstar’, released via AATW/Island Records.
Written and produced by Dappy with TMS, ‘Rockstar’ is a rousing pop-rock-urban anthem. Once again, the song fuses an eclectic mix of sounds that when combined produce a track that is unmistakably ‘Dappy’.
Lyrically the track is an ode to the life of a rock star, dying young like 'The 27 Club’, the group of musicians who all tragically died at the age of 27. Dappy references Amy Winehouse and Brian Jones (Rolling Stones) whilst rapping, ‘Is there heaven for the forever twenty sevens, could it be three years till I’m jammin with legends.’
Dappy says: "This song is barrier breaking. The track is all about paying homage to 'The 27 Club' and amazing artists such as Amy Winehouse. It's a song about people getting to their lowest, but lyrically it talks of turning a negative into a positive."
Queen megastar Brian May also features on the track. Brian recently spoke publicly of his appreciation for ‘No Regrets’, so when Dappy approached Brian about appearing on ‘Rockstar’, he immediately said yes.
Brian says: "I don't have time for 'guesting' much any more on people's records. But when this track arrived in my inbox, I couldn't say no. Dappy's work reminds me that, although our 'genres' may be a million miles apart, there are areas where we speak the same language. He's a Rock Star!"
‘Rockstar’ is the second single to be taken from Dappy’s debut solo album due out in 2012. Dappy’s ‘No Regrets’ flew straight to the top of the Official UK Singles Chart, setting a new chart record, as the 11th consecutive UK artist to top the single chart in 2011, the longest run of No.1s by UK acts ever.
Dappy has achieved unprecedented success both as a solo artist and as part of N-Dubz, without question one of the most culturally significant groups in contemporary British pop music. Their albums ‘Uncle B,’ ‘Against All Odds’ and ‘Love.Live.Life’ have to-date sold over 1 million copies in the UK. Earlier this year, the band completed a sell out arena tour, with dates at London’s huge O2 and the MEN in Manchester. With over 100 million views on YouTube, 1 million friends on Facebook and 200,000 followers on Twitter Dappy and N-Dubz are among the most powerful names in music.
December saw Dappy tour the UK as a solo artist for the first time, winning rave reviews and showcasing eagerly awaited new material to his huge fanbase.
In addition, Dappy has recently launched his own clothing brand ‘MIGI Clothing’, named after his sons Milo and Gino. He has big plans for extending the brand this year. Now, with a solo No.1 under his belt and debut album nearing completion, 2012 looks set to be the biggest year of the Dappy success story to date.
Rockstar is released to radio tomorrow - January 18th.
