Press Release: May and Ellis Roar In For Pride of Cape Town Launch

Tuesday 27th March, 2012, Grand Café & Beach, Granger Bay, Cape Town

Today it was announced that Queen guitar legend Brian May CBE and acclaimed West End and Broadway singing star Kerry Ellis will make a special appearance at the Grand Café & Beach, Granger Bay, Cape Town, as part of a spectacular showcase to launch PRIDE OF CAPE TOWN.

PRIDE OF CAPE TOWN is a major public arts event that will see a fabulous pride of 50 life-size lion sculptures prowling the V&A Waterfront in the summer of 2013 in aid of international wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation.

A selection of these impressive sculptures will be officially unveiled at the exclusive launch party to an audience of 250 lucky guests who will be amongst the first to have the opportunity to pledge their support and get involved!

Born Free is inviting all companies and private individuals interested in sponsoring a lion and being part of Pride of Cape Town to get in touch as soon as possible.

Attendance on the night is strictly by invitation and demand will undoubtedly be high not least for this unique guest appearance by the legendary Brian May and Kerry Ellis which promises to be a major highlight on the night.

Brian and Kerry have become an award winning music partnership since May produced and recorded Kerry’s first album, “Anthems”.  May then created the live show “Anthems: The Concert” to highlight Kerry’s unique vocal talents. The show last month won Kerry the Best Solo Performance award at the prestigious UK What’s On Stage awards which are entirely voted by the public.

Brian May, who was last in South Africa in 2005 for the historic 46664 music concert in George, Western Cape, spearheaded by Queen and in aid of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said, “It will be incredible to be back in South Africa. By creating this amazing art event we hope not only to inspire the public but also attract the support of the corporate sector, raising funds to help protect and conserve a species which, across much of Africa, is now in serious trouble.”

Born Free also hopes to announce that Brian and Kerry will be joined by another iconic and much-loved guest, from the movie and conservation world, who will be flying in to Cape Town especially for the event. Details have yet to be confirmed.

PRIDE OF CAPE TOWN aims to raise money for Born Free’s work to protect and conserve lions in the wild. Lion numbers have dramatically dropped due to persecution, loss of habitat and unsustainable trophy-hunting. Their position has never been more perilous and there may be as few as 25,000 left across the entire continent. Born Free already has long-established links with South Africa and operates Big Cat Rescue and Education Centres at the prestigious Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape.

Each stunning lion, will be released to ‘prowl’ the streets of Cape Town in 2013, sponsored by individuals and companies and uniquely decorated by international and local artists in an ‘eye catching’ and creative way.

The animal sculptures and concept are the brain-child of Wild in Art, headed by Charlie Langhorne who was previously involved with "Cow Parade in South Africa and has worked with Born Free on many public art works in the UK and Kenya.

Brian May's support for Pride of Cape Town is the musician/singer's latest commitment to animal welfare and protection. Through his independently founded Save-Me campaign May has dedicated himself to the pursuit of humane treatment of all animals.

Excitement is mounting in anticipation of the Pride of Cape Town launch which, together with Brian and Kerry’s arrival – and along with the magnificent lions – will be the setting for a wildlife event not to be missed!

PRIDE OF CAPE TOWN is being presented in partnership with Wild in Art and Shamwari Group and is kindly supported by SAA and the V&A Waterfront.
