Live In Ukraine
Live in Ukraine
By Gary Taylor and Georg Purvis (www.queenpedia.com)
Live in Ukraine was a CD/DVD package by Queen + Paul Rodgers, and was released in the UK on 15 June 2009, reached No 2 in the music video charts went platinum.
The free concert took place in Kharkov's historic and massive Freedom Square (during World War II the area was used to land planes), where the band played to some 350,000 fans (Queen's biggest audience yet) to raise AIDS awareness, and over 10 million homes tuned in to watch the concert live on TV. The band were approached to help Ukraine's Elena Franchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation reach out to the youth of the country with the message "Don't Let Aids Ruin Your Life", in a country facing the highest rising rate of infection throughout Europe, and the band duly obliged.
The concert titled "Life Must Go On", was filmed and directed by David Mallet, with whom Queen had previously worked on concerts and various promotional videos since Under Pressure in 1981, and was not only broadcast live on television, but was also released in cinemas in the UK and across Europe (as well as South Africa and Brazil), for one night only as Let The Cosmos Rock on 1 December 2008, World AIDS Day. The film was shown in American movie theatres for one night only on 6 November. A special high definition cinema version of the concert, Let the Cosmos Rock - Queen + Paul Rodgers Live in Ukraine, played in over 100 specially selected cinemas in a unique one-night-only presentation. In the UK alone, the film reached more than 40 screens. “The big screen setting is an ideal medium in which to feel a sense of participation in the Kharkov event,” says director David Mallet. “This was by far the biggest show of its kind ever staged. The equipment needed two Antonov 124 aircraft - the world’s biggest cargo planes - to get it into the Ukraine, and it is almost impossible to imagine the scale of it once it was built. You would never get a sense of that on television or DVD, which is why it had to be made for the biggest of screens. You could never otherwise experience that feeling of being in there among that crowd; think of it - this was four or five times bigger than your normal Hyde Park concert audience.”
Kicking off Queen + Paul Rodgers' 2008 Rock the Cosmos tour in Kharkov was indeed a unique starting point for a tour and took place 3 days before the tour properly started in Russia, and two shows at Moscow's SCO Olympic Arena. The tour continued on through Europe with gigs in Latvia, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Luxembourg, UK, Spain, Hungary, Serbia, Czech Republic, Austria, Dubai and ending the tour in Sout America with dates in Chile, Argentina and Brazil.
The concert is beautifully shot, but the similarity of the set list to Return Of The Champions was disappointing to some fans. For whatever reason, the band hadn't yet incorporated a lot of the new material from The Cosmos Rocks album into the set list, so only Cosmos Rockin' and C-lebrity are performed, though Say It's Not True was played like the new, harder rocking version on the album than on the previous tour. Some other adventurous material was performed, too: One Vision was brought out for the first time since 1986 and used as the opener, and Paul's Shooting Star was played live for the first time too. Perhaps the biggest and most welcome surprise came after Brian's guitar solo, when he and Freddie (by way of the video screen and the original audio recording) duetted on Bijou. Roger also included a unique drum solo, longer than on the previous tour, where he and Danny Miranda fooled around on an upright electric bass for a few minutes, and playing parts to Another One Bites The Dust and Under Pressure, before Roger sat down at a basic drum set of bass, snare drum and hi-hat. As he started his solo, a roadie would assemble a much larger kit around him as Roger carried on playing the drums, before breaking into I'm In Love With My Car.
Roger Taylor - “What a team, what an audience, what a night So glad we came. I will remember this when I'm even older!” A Kind Of Magic, Radio Ga Ga and Wishing Well were all omitted from this release, though they were made available as bonus audio downloads from the likes of Amazon and itunes.
The DVD was produced by Justin Shirley-Smith and Kris Fredriksson with the packaging designed by Richard Gray. The DVD was released as a single disc DVD and a double pack limited DVD set with a corresponding 2-CD version of the show included. A limited edition custom tin box was also issued and included the 1-DVD and 2-CD set plus a unique t-shirt featuring a design previously only available from the unforgettable night in Kharkov. The American release on 1 September 2009, was issued as a 2-CD set in a double jewel case with the DVD added as the extra disc to the package. Funds raised through sponsorship and public contribution since the event have contributed to building an Aids orphanage in Kharkov.
Brian May - “an unforgettable experience…one of those rare things in life which you know you will never forget. A meeting in Music, but also a coming together to fight a common enemy…”
Roger Taylor - “We would like to say a big thank you to the people of the Ukraine in giving Queen such a wonderful welcome after so many years. We hope the concert helped to bring a message of awareness of the terrible threat of HIV/AIDS to all the people! We have suffered the great loss of our dear singer Freddie Mercury - we hope this kind of loss does not happen to you. Be kind to yourselves - be careful - be alive!”
Paul Rodgers - “To all who came out and rocked with us thank you. We believe that our Aids Awareness message was received by 20 million! Hopefully we touched those hearts and minds and I pray that it makes a difference."

Seagull, you fly across the horizon Into the misty morning sun. Nobody asks you where you are going, Nobody knows where you're from. Here is a man asking the question Is this really the end of the world? Seagull, you must have known for a long time The shape of things to come. Now you fly, through the sky, never asking why, And you fly all around 'til somebody, Shoots you down. Da da da da da da da down. Mm mm mm mm, mm mm. Seagull, you fly, across the horizon, Into the misty morning sun. Nobody asks you where you are going, Nobody knows where you are from, Now you fly through the sky, never asking why, And you fly all around 'til somebody, yeah, Shoots you down. Mm mm, yeah. Seagull you fly, seagull you fly away. And you fly away today And you fly away tomorrow And you fly away, leave me to my sorrow. Mm, mm, mm. Seagull go and fly, mm, mm, mm, Fly to your tomorrow, leave me to my sorrow, fly.

Johnny was a schoolboy When he heard his first Beatles song Love Me Do I think it was And from there it didn't take him long Got himself a guitar Used to play every night Now he's in a rock and roll outfit and everything's all right Don't ya know Johnny told his mama Hey, Mama, I'm going away I'm gonna hit the big time Gonna be a big star someday Momma came to the door With a teardrop in her eye Johnny said "Don't cry Momma, Smile and wave goodbye." Don't you know Don't you know That you are a shooting star,..(don't you know, don't you know) Don't you know that you are A Shooting Star And all the world will love you Just as long..as long as you are?
