MADE IN HEAVEN By Greg Brooks and Gary Taylor Queen’s 15th studio album was also, tragically, their last with Freddie Mercury. Following Freddie’s death in 1991, the remaining band members - John Deacon, Roger Taylor and Brian May – spent the next four years working sporadically on a new project with the vocal recordings left behind by Freddie. It was a difficult and enormously challenging process on many levels, unprecedented in terms of personal anguish, but when Made In Heaven emerged it quickly established itself as one of Queen’s finest and most accomplished pieces of work. Made In Heaven took its title from one of Freddie’s solo songs of 1985 which the band had reworked. The album was recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux Switzerland and was produced by Queen. It was co produced and engineered by David Richards, with assistance from Justin Shirley-Smith and Joshua J. Macrae. Although Freddie was told by his doctors in 1989 that he might not be around long enough to finish the project he and the band were working on in that year, The Miracle album, in fact he went on to finish that LP and indeed the next project too, Innuendo, in 1991. His health and physical condition was however, by the end of the Innuendo sessions, severely compromised. Despite innumerable difficulties, Freddie remained utterly focussed, determined to record more and more vocals until he could record no more. It was his wish that wherever possible, and particularly in terms of work, that things carry on as normal, and so it was that he and the band set about recording as much as they could within the time left to them. The first half of 1991 saw an unusual period of recording like no other in the band’s career, governed largely by Freddie and his failing health. Brian May: “By the time we were recording these tracks, we’d had the discussions and knew that we were totally on borrowed time. So our plan was to just make full use of Freddie as much as possible. We basically lived in the studio for a while and he would call and say, ‘I can come in for a few hours today’. Our plan was just to make as much use of him as we could. He said, ‘Get me to sing anything. Write me anything and I will sing it. I will give it my ALL. I will leave you as much material as I possibly can’.” Roger Taylor: "Freddie knew his time was limited and he really wanted to work and to keep going. He felt that that was the best way to keep his spirits up, and he wanted to leave as much as possible. We certainly agreed, so we backed him up right to the hilt. "With ‘The Miracle' he wasn't that well, but he wasn't that ill. And that was more of an effort, a bit of a long album to make. But for ‘Innuendo’, he really wasn't very well. I think there are some extraordinary performances on that one. I find it a very strong album all the way through. It's quite emotional."? No-one knew when or even if Freddie would return for more recordings, or which session would be his last. The whole recording process for this final album was, as one of the great man’s earliest lyrics has it, very much in the lap of the gods. Even so, regardless of his personal difficulties, Freddie somehow found the strength to muster some truly breathtaking vocal performances, among of the most extraordinary of his career, digging deep within himself and finding a depth and spirit like never before. He seemed to find a new dimension to his voice and poured his very soul into every note. As Brian May would later recall, Freddie could barely stand up during the last sessions; every hour he was present at the Mountain studios required superhuman effort, and yet none of this is evident on the final album. It is impossible to believe that the magnificent voice behind songs such as A Winter’s Tale, You Don’t Fool Me and Mother Love could have been recorded by someone as physically weak as Freddie was by then. Many people agree that these performances (and those on Innuendo) are not only great, but among the best and most moving of Freddie’s career. Freddie was later to comment that despite his increasing physical deterioration, he was hugely thankful that his voice had somehow remained unscathed. No-one disputes that one of rock music’s greatest and most powerful voices ever sounded better than on this last album. Brian May: "A lot of it was really, strangely enough, quite joyous. It sounds odd to say that, and people are going to hate me for saying it, but I know Freddie had some very good times in those last periods. "It was tough, but there was a lot of joy during the final recordings. Freddie did not let it become downbeat. He was always ‘Up’ if he was in the recording studio, always full of ideas, enthusiasm and great passion.” Roger: "I think the last thing that he wanted was to draw attention to any kind of weakness or frailty - which was all too obvious anyway. He didn't want any kind of pity or anything like that, and he was incredibly brave about the whole thing.”? Brian: “I think there was maybe a part of him that thought the miracle would come. I think we all did. I suppose you do, don't you? You never give up hope, and Freddie was certainly like that. I never saw him kind of lay down, put his head in his hands, and let it all get on top of him, never ever. He would always just get on with things. And we had some very funny times. We were very focused and very together as a group. I think we all realised how precious those moments possibly were going be."? Sadly, the inevitable time came when Freddie could work no more. He had recorded his final sessions and never attended the studio again. The last recordings of Freddie Mercury were in the can, for the rest of Queen to work their collective magic upon when they felt able to. Now, with strict instructions from Freddie, it was up to John, Brian and Roger to complete the songs and album without their beloved colleague. In addition to brand new material, the Made In Heaven album also features tracks from Freddie’s solo career, but in radically revised fashion; re-worked, but with all the familiar distinctive Queen trademarks and production techniques evident from beginning to end. The album cover concept by Queen and Richard Gray features the even more larger than life Freddie Mercury statue (sculpted by Irena Sedlecka) overlooking Lake Geneva in Switzerland, in a sumptuous sunrise setting – the place at which Freddie had written and recorded his last songs, and which had so inspired and influenced him. The gatefold sleeve reveals a similar view but this time taken at sunset. The statue is now a permanent fixture by the lake, with Freddie standing proud, purveyor of a spectacular landscape and the many people that come to visit him. The effigy is every bit as imposing as Freddie was on stage and has become a great tourist attraction. Queen’s inimitable front man stands tall, overseeing (just like his final lyrics described) a breath-taking scene – the exact same view he himself enjoyed so much and indeed captured in the lyrics of one of his final songs, A Winter’s Tale; swans floating by, sea-gulls flying over, a silky moon up in the sky, mountains zoomin' higher, quiet and peaceful, tranquil and blissful, a kind of magic in the air, a truly magnificent view, a breathtaking scene, an extraordinary place! The album begins with It’s A Beautiful Day, an elegant song with just Freddie on vocals and piano that dates back to Queen sessions for The Game album of early 1980. Next, is a track from Freddie’s debut solo LP of 1985, Made In Heaven, the track which much later on would lend its name to this album. Made In Heaven was in fact going to be the title of that first Freddie solo album, but was changed late in the day to Mr Bad Guy. This Queen version is a somewhat heavier arrangement to the original recording, and even more dramatic. The gospel influenced Let Me Live, comes next, with a vocal from Freddie that truly sends a shiver down the spine. One of the most emotive of all Queen tracks, and so much loved by the fans, Freddie handles the poignant lyric with typical passion to deliver an unforgettably moving performance. The earliest form of this song dates way back to 1981 Hot Space sessions in Munich, but is significantly different to this extravagant arrangement. Let Me Live was the first Queen song to contain lead vocals sung in turn by Freddie, Brian and Roger. The last song Freddie recorded was a co-write with Brian in the form of the ethereal sounding Mother Love. Featuring yet another chilling vocal by Freddie, this performance is exquisite on every level, from the first to last note. It is also the song that Freddie was never able to finish, hence the last verse being sung, with equal feeling, by Brian. The track has an intriguing end section in the form of brief samples taken from Queen’s first hit single Seven Seas Of Rhye (1974), Freddie’s cover version of Goin’ Back (released under the name of Larry Lurex in 1973) and a brief moment from one of Queen’s Wembley Stadium concerts in July 1986. And then, suddenly, with the cry of a baby, and a new life born, the song ends. Brian May: "Fred, as normal, got to some point and said ‘No, no, no! This isn't good enough. I have to go higher here. I have to put more into this. I have to get more power in.’ So, he downs a couple of vodkas, stands up, and goes for it. And you can hear in the middle eight of ‘Mother Love’, he just soars to incredible heights. And this is a man who can't really stand any more, without incredible pain, and is very weak. He has no flesh on his bones, and yet you can hear the power, the will that he's still got."? “The last thing I ever did together with Freddie was that track, ‘Mother Love’. It was never finished. He never came back to do the final verse, but to the end, even when he couldn't even stand, without propping himself up, he was just giving it his all. You can hear the incredible strength of his voice in that track, and the passion that's he putting into it. And we're making it up as we go along. I'm scribbling words on pieces of paper and he's grabbing them and saying, ‘Roll the tape. I'll do this one.’ He knew that it might be the last time he was ever able to sing, and in that case it was." Next, is My Life Has Been Saved, a song originally recorded at the time of The Miracle album in 1989, and used as the B-side to the Scandal single at that time. Here the track has been musically re-worked but features the same vocal from Freddie, who also supplies some lovely piano. Another of Freddie’s songs that started life on his first solo album is the familiar I Was Born To Love You. This too was re-worked for this album and takes on a much heavier guitar-driven feel to the original more dancier track - that which became Freddie’s second solo single in 1985 and reached No 11 in the UK charts, aided by a typically over the top video. The first single from this album was Heaven For Everyone, a track written by Roger and recorded by his ‘occasional’ second band The Cross for their 1988 debut album Shove It. The album version originally had Freddie singing lead vocals as a guest artist, while the single instead featured Roger, but for this updated version Queen recorded new instrumentation and added backing vocals. The song still retains the laid-back feel of the original, but like all Queen undertakings is instantly projected to a new level when the band work together as one. Too Much Love Will Kill You was written by Brian with the help of friends Frank Musker and Elizabeth Lamers, and was set to be included on The Miracle album in 1989. Due to publishing issues, it never made the final release but instead made it onto Brian’s solo album Back To The Light three years later. The song was released as a single and became Brian’s highest charting solo single, reaching No 5 in the UK charts. Its author would later receive an Ivor Novello award for it and perform it live at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert on April 20th 1992. This Queen version is different to that which was recorded originally, but of course contains an intensity and power that all Freddie’s performances had. The next song is You Don’t Fool Me, an up-tempo dance-oriented track built around bass guitar and keyboards, and made up of various vocal parts from Freddie. It further features a scorching guitar solo in the middle showing yet another magical aspect of the home-made guitar. The very last song that Freddie composed was the tender and straight from the heart, A Winter’s Tale. This track finds Freddie conjuring words like a lyrical magician, in order to capture in song his particular view of his beloved Montreux, the place he chose to spend a large part of his final years. This recording is truly exceptional, and much loved by the fans. The whole band delivers a dreamy feel to the track and Freddie’s remarkable vocal completely belies any trace of illness. It is a singularly startling performance matched only by a guitar solo that seems to be heaven sent. Just as the album started, so it ends, with a Reprise rendition of It’s a Beautiful Day. This even more dramatic version includes samples from Queen’s very first hit Seven Seas Of Rhye, from 1974. Like all the material on this album, which came too late for the band to perform in concert, this track has ‘Queen Live’ written into every groove. So much of the material on Made In Heaven and its two predecessors (The Miracle and Innuendo) would have translated beautifully to the concert domain, but sadly it was never to be. The Made In Heaven album was released on November 6th 1995 and was promoted as ‘The breathtaking final album’. Most significantly of all, John, Brian and Roger concluded the sleeve credits with, ‘Dedicated to the immortal spirit of Freddie Mercury’. Although recording without their beloved friend and lead singer was immensely difficult for much of the time, and with various band members also pursuing solo projects throughout the Heaven sessions, the finished album would instantly become one of the most popular with fans and give the band their most successful studio album to date. Made In Heaven immediately went to No 1 in the UK, as well as Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Holland, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain. It further made the top ten in Japan, and in most countries of the world, achieving multiple platinum sales status, and eventually selling in excess of 20 million copies. The album faired less well in the USA where it reached No 58 (gold status) when released on 7th November 1995. Brian: “It was a long journey, and it was a much bigger job than anyone realised. The object was to make an album that sounded like four guys in a studio. We knew that if we achieved that, then no-one would ask any questions. We started off with just scraps of tape. It was a huge job; two years of my life finding a way of developing the songs, but at the same time using the limited input we had from Freddie. Sometimes there was a complete first take vocal, while other times there was no more than three or four lines. It was a labour of love for me, working through the night on perhaps just one line.” For the CD editions of the album, a special twenty minute untitled and uncredited track was included. Referred to simply as Track 13, this mysterious ambient piece of music was mainly created by producer David Richards, with contributions from Brian and Roger, and ends, rather hauntingly, with Freddie’s voice from an out-take moment. We hear simply, “Fab!” and so ends an unusual and rather fitting end to this most majestic and critically acclaimed of Queen albums. At the same time this album emerged, a video release of a documentary called Champions Of The World was also released, charting the bands rise to fame from the early days right up to this final project. Having firmly established themselves as the biggest selling music video artists of all time, with sales of more than 2 million tapes up to this point, this was the definitive Queen documentary containing a wealth of material not previously available and running to 2 hours long. The video highlighted several of the band’s many milestone moments, and covered the music, concert tours and videos, as well as Queen’s influence on other artists. Also at this time the band joined forces with the British Film Institute in a unique new venture to produce eight short films (at the cost of £500,000) to illustrate the content of the individual Made In Heaven album tracks. Brian May: “It emerged that the BFI were very short of funds to enable some of their young directors to get started. We thought this would solve many problems with one stroke. We’ll give them some money and they can figure out the most deserving cause to give it to and make whatever videos they like for the music.” For the first time the band would adopt a completely ‘hands off’ approach, allowing the young directors and the BFI to decide how best to represent their music. The result was eight very different short films using songs from the Made In Heaven album as their starting point and soundtrack, and which could be shown the world over to promote the LP and subsequent singles. This unlikely compilation was released on home video as Made In Heaven – The Films in November 1996, and then on DVD in 2003. The first single to be released two weeks prior to the arrival of the album was a single version of Heaven For Everyone. Issued in the UK on 23rd October 1995, the disc entered the charts at No 2 and gained a silver disc award. It was a huge hit across the world too, reaching the top 10 in 24 countries and with a No 1 in 12 of them. It would be the second single release in the USA, c/w the little known Soul Brother from 1981. This was the first time that a Queen single had not been released on the 7” vinyl format. Instead, two CD editions and a cassette single were issued. One of the tracks that featured on these products was a subtly different mix of It’s A Beautiful Day. Two videos were made to promote this track; a David Mallet version using old film clips, and the BFI film; an enthralling piece called Evolution, by Simon Pummell. The next single to emerge in the UK was A Winter’s Tale c/w Thank God It’s Christmas and a live track called Rock In Rio Blues. Released on December 11th, the single reached No 6 in the UK charts as well as achieving a handful of top 30 positions elsewhere in Europe. Two videos were made to accompany the disc. The first was a specially made film by the Torpedo Twins, featuring Freddie’s hand written lyrics superimposed over winter scenes, stills and images of the band, and the second was the BFI film by Chris Rodley, called Outside In. The third single to be released in the UK, and a few territories in Europe (as well as being the first USA single from this album - c/w Rock In Rio Blues) was Too Much Love Will Kill You. Released on 26th February 1996, with a 7” version in pink vinyl, and coupled with the classic We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions pairing of twenty years earlier, the single stalled at No 15. Of course, in Freddie’s absence, the subject of promotional videos was now a tricky one, and so, as before, new footage was put together by the Torpedo partnership, and circulated alongside another BFI film - Heart-Ache by Simon Pummell. On June 17th 1996 the fourth single Let Me Live (c/w Fat Bottomed Girls and Bicycle Race) was released in a number of countries in Europe, and in Mexico. The UK single reached No 9 in the charts and was also released as a collectible 7” picture disc. The only video made for this track was the BFI footage, by Bernard Rudden, entitled Return Trip. The final single to be released from Made In Heaven in the UK, USA and Europe, was You Don’t Fool Me. Released on 18th November 1996, also as a 12” in silver vinyl, it reached No 17 in the charts. It was also a big hit across Europe, reaching the top 30 in many countries, and No 1 in Italy. The various worldwide singles contained numerous remixes of the track as well as the album version. The video used to promote the single was the BFI film by Mark Szaszy, also called You Don’t Fool Me. In Japan only, a one track CD single of I Was Born To Love You was issued in February 1996, and used to promote Kirin beer on TV, radio and cinema. In 2004 the track was further used as the theme to the Japanese TV drama Pride, and the single released in the wake of this reached the No 1 spot. ? Did You Know?

1. The first edition promo copies of Made In Heaven have extra backing vocals using the main line from the soul classic Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart. They had to be removed due to legal reasons. 2. BBC Radio 1 'banned' Let Me Live from the air waves - despite this it still reached No.9 in the UK singles chart. 3. The inlay of the album sleeve featured favourite photos of the remaining band members with Freddie Mercury. 4. Special films were made by The British Film Institute to accompany Made in Heaven and were funded solely by Queen at a cost of £500,000. 5. Track 3 on Made In Heaven, Let Me Live, actually started out with Rod Stewart on vocals.

I heard some Rod Stewart with Queen on YouTube with the song "Peace Of My Heart" which was later renamed to "Let Me Live". The Rod Stewart recordings with Queen never have had a release. And recordings you can hear are mega-rare.

Eugene

Rod Stewart? Those "three, four" in the very beginning?
