Rio - 46664 Show Reports

Copacabana Stages Big Concert In November 2008 – Event Aims to To Raise funds To Fight AIDS.

Rio is to stage, on 30 November 2008, an edition of the “46664 It’s In Your Hands”, a megashow featuring artists from across the world, organised with South African leader Nelson Mandela, to raise funds to fight AIDS.

A six hour show, the concert will take place on Copacabana Beach on a stage in front of the Copacabana Palace, in the same spot as the Rolling Stones had their show in February last year. The details were agreed in a meeting last week in Johannesburg, South Africa, between Subsecretary of Event from the Mayor’s office, Ana Maria Maia, and the producers of the show.

Meetings in Rio will start to take place from January. Artists have not yet been selected, but the Subsecretary does not discount the possibility of having artists that are traditionally know for their social conscience, like Bono from U2 and Elton John. There is already interest in Queen, who have performed in Brazil in the past, whose lead singer Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991.

“Brazil has been chosen for its official policies taken to fight AIDS (like free cocktail medicines, and the breaking of patents), furthermore the Rolling Stones concert gave the city the visability and opened up the way for this kind of major event,” said Ana Maria. She said that the idea now is to get sponsorship from multi-nationals to help finance the concert.

The concert bill will include South African and Brazilian artists. The Mayor’s office will come in with logistics and security of the event. In addition, the city is considering as well a year long prevention campaign tied into the concert.
