Sir Patrick Moore was the first pioneer of science education in the age of television. His true contribution has still to be fully recognised, and the creators of the new documentary hope the appreciation of him by his friends and colleagues will play a part in establishing his place in the firmament of the greatest science teachers of all time.
Patrick spent vast amounts of his professional life in front of a camera, but footage of Patrick as himself, at home with friends barely exists. Patrick Moore in the Sun is the first documentary on the legendary astronomer that will take audiences inside his intriguing and fascinating Selsey house and it is set on the day of the transit of Venus. Audiences will feel as if they are right there at Farthings on 8 June 2004, as astronomers, including Chris Lintott and Brian May gather around the legendary presenter of the Sky at Night to witness this historic astronomical event.
The documentary reveals Patrick's great kindness, wit and wisdom in intimate surroundings, with professional and amateur astronomy friends freely relating their sincere love and appreciation of the great man who inspired their interest in astronomy, and whom they could count on as a true friend.
Unknown to many, Patrick was also a leading lunar expert who NASA consulted about the surface of the moon before the Apollo landings. Putting on another hat, he was known to a new generation as the iconic GamesMaster. He was eternally curious, embracing different personas in life, and relished each day, one of his most renowned expressions being,
"I used to get up in the morning and say to myself "what don't I have time to do today".
European AstroFest conference attendees will be the first to see exclusive footage from the new film in production. Patrick’s friend Sir Brian May proposed the idea and Robin Rees, their publisher, was the driving force behind the film. Entitled Patrick Moore in the Sun, it is being revealed to mark the tenth anniversary of Sir Patrick Moore’s death. This special European AstroFest presentation will be introduced by Brian May and Robin Rees.
